Government Tackles Roadworks Chaos

The government has announced a package of measures designed to alleviate the disruption caused by roadworks.

Road user groups, bus operators, local highway authorities and utility companies will be called to a summit hosted by the Department for Transport later this year to examine ways in which the inconvenience caused by roadworks can be reduced.

As part of the initiative, a pioneering roadworks permit scheme will go into force in Kent next year that allows the county council to control and coordinate roadworks, set conditions on timing and issue fines when work overruns.

Transport Minister, Sadiq Khan, said: 'Everyone understands that roadworks are necessary to keep essential infrastructure in good order, but this should not mean constant inconvenience to the travelling public. Local authorities and utility companies must up their game.'

The government also plans to introduce a system of compulsory five-yearly tests to ensure that the knowledge and skills of those working in the highway are kept up to date.
